Development and Peace - Caritas Canada

Development and Peace — Caritas Canada is the official international development organization of the Canadian Catholic Church and the Canadian member of the Caritas Internationalis confederation of Catholic relief, development and social service organisations.

Development and Peace was established in 1967 by the bishops of Canada, who were inspired by the link that Pope Paul VI made between development and peace in his encyclical, Populorum Progressio. It is a membership-led organization that is supported by parish collections, individual donations and government grants, principally from Global Affairs Canada.

Guided by the principles of Catholic Social Teaching, Development and Peace works in partnership with local organizations in over 30 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. In addition to responding sensitively to humanitarian emergencies, it works with its partners to promote alternatives to unjust social, political and economic structures through longer-term community-led programs and projects that operate in solidarity with and respect and restore the dignity and agency of some of our most vulnerable sisters and brothers in the Global South.

In Canada, Development and Peace works in parishes, Catholic schools and the wider community to educate people about the causes of poverty and the impacts of Canadian policies and lifestyle choices and to mobilize people to act for positive social change.

Our education, advocacy and fund-raising work here in Canada is carried out by Development and Peace members from coast to coast. 

Development and Peace’s members are organized across the country in 4 regions. Diocesan Councils in each region support local Development and Peace parish groups. Development and Peace’s Animators are the first line of contact between diocesan councils and Development and Peace staff. The Animator for Central Ontario (which includes our archdiocese) is Emily Lukasik.

Development and Peace’s Toronto Archdiocesan Council meets regularly at Development and Peace’s Toronto office.

Our parish supports a Durham Region Development and Peace Group that meets regularly.
