Life Teen

Life Teen is our program that is for students in Grades 9-12. There’s a lot that’s similar to Edge, however, we delve deeper into the mysteries of the faith and look at important social issues through a Catholic worldview. As with all youth ministry the main goal of Life Teen is to lead teens closer to Christ.

As we return to a new year of ministry for 2021/2022 we have three main series for the year: After Exodus, A Call From Within, and  Downside Up. In addition to these we have two Issue Nights scheduled. These series, described below, are intended to engage teens in an active way to learn ever more deeply about the Catholic faith and how it can impact their daily lives. These programs are designed to engage everyone from those who know nothing about the faith to those who are actively living a Christ-centred life. We encourage all teens in Grades 9-12 to join Life Teen.

After Exodus

The Hebrews, after long enslavement to the Egyptians, set out on a long journey to the Promised Land. Along the way, while they had gained physical freedom, they soon came face to face with the reality of their slavery to sin as they sought to live as God’s people. Out of His loving goodness, God gave Moses the Ten Commandments to reveal to the Israelites how to find freedom from sin and live in His love. However, these commandments were not just for the Israelites in the desert but for all of us. After Exodus is a Life Night series that helps teens understand the Ten Commandments’ moral concepts to help guide their lives to be Jesus’ disciples.

Starting with the Ten Commandments this year will provide the groundwork for understanding the moral life in relation to Christ. With this base we will be able to dive deeper into our faith lives later in the year.

A Call From Within

Ignatian, Franciscan, Augustinian, and Thomastic are four of the most influential Catholic spiritual traditions. While none of these spiritualities fully encompass the entirety of the rich, multifaceted Catholic faith, coming to know each of these spiritualities makes it possible for us to understand our own personality and needs for our spiritual journey. A Call From Within is a Life Night series that introduces teens to the four most common Catholic spiritualities, giving them the tools to assess if a particular spirituality type can aid them in their relationship with God.

In After Exodus we examine the moral life and the Ten Commandments we take it to the next level with A Call From Within when we learn about four major Catholic spiritual traditions. Knowing these traditions can help us better discern how we may approach our relationship with Christ and enrich our prayer lives.

Downside Up

Thinking about our future can cause feelings of anxiety and uncertainty, but the process of discernment about our personal vocations was never meant to be a stressful one. Rather, discernment and docility to the Holy Spirit are meant to empower us in the present moment, encouraging us to live a life of discipleship that enables us to fulfill our universal vocation: the invitation to a life of love through discipleship. By committing to our vocation of discipleship, we find the grace that guides us to knowing the will of the Father in our lives. DownsideUp is a Life Night series for teens to explore how Jesus calls teens to participate in the Kingdom of God as the foundation of discipleship.

Our final Life Night series takes what we have learned about the moral life, spirituality, and prayer to a climax. We look at our purpose in life and we can discern our vocation by being docile to the Holy Spirit in our lives.

Issue Nights

Issue Nights are Life Nights specifically designed to look at the tough topics of today through a Catholic worldview. There are currently no set topics for the nights at this moment. Topics will be chosen later in the ministry year to focus on current issues and topics that are most affecting the lives of teens or are prevalent in the public square.

Year Summary

As we embark on the journey of this year of Life Teen together we have a great journey set up for us. In After Exodus we start by learning that the Ten Commandments are more than just rules, but a way to set us free from the slavery of sin. We learn that they are a way to engage in the life of Christ. With this foundation we continue to learn how we can grow in a life of prayer. A Call From Within teaches us about influential Catholic spiritual traditions. These can help us find our prayer and spirituality style to help us better engage in this life in Christ. We take our knowledge of our moral and spiritual life and apply it in Downside Up when we learn about our call in life. By being docile to the Holy Spirit we can discern our vocation and how it can serve others.

Throughout the year there will be opportunities for Social Nights and Issue Nights. The Issue Nights in particular will help us apply what we are learning throughout the year and engage the culture with that knowledge from a Catholic worldview. Social Nights give us the opportunity to unwind and get to know each other better.
